Minister of Education Honourable Rob Fleming issued the following statement:
Negotiating a settlement requires union leaders to stand in front of their members and explain what has been achieved at the bargaining table. I worry the BCTF leadership is actually counting on government to legislate an end to this strike so they can avoid having a difficult conversation with their members about what is realistic and achievable.
The parties have completed 71 bargaining sessions as well as several earlier exploratory discussions with third parties.
Mediator Vince Ready has agreed to monitor the situation, and to resume exploratory talks or commence full mediation when he believes it will be productive.
Both parties have agreed they will not engage in public discussion on the details of bargaining pending further discussions with Mr. Ready.
